Max Attack! Glenn Maxwell’s Century Leads Australia to Crushing Win in St Lucia

Gros Islet, St Lucia: Glenn Maxwell turned in a batting masterclass, smashing a century to lead Australia to a comprehensive 7-wicket victory over West Indies in the second T20I on Saturday.

Chasing 172, Australia rode Maxwell’s 103 off 51 balls to reach the target with 13 balls to spare. The right-hander, who became the first Australian to score a T20I century against West Indies, hit 10 fours and four sixes in his whirlwind knock.

Maxwell’s century was his fourth in T20Is, the most by any batsman in the format. He surpassed Chris Gayle, who has three centuries to his name.

The Australian opener started cautiously, but soon found his groove, taking on the West Indies bowlers with disdain. He reached his fifty off 32 balls and then accelerated, bringing up his century in just 45 deliveries.

Maxwell’s fireworks overshadowed a fine half-century from West Indies opener Kyle Mayers. Mayers struck 73 off 50 balls, but his efforts were not enough to prevent his team from a defeat.

Earlier, West Indies were put in to bat and posted a competitive 171 for 6. Mayers and Shamarh Brooks (46) were the top scorers for the hosts.

Australia’s bowlers were disciplined, with Mitchell Starc (2/28) and Adam Zampa (2/29) picking up two wickets each.

The victory gives Australia a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. The third T20I will be played on Tuesday in Basseterre, St Kitts.
